From Illustration to Infographic

The Golden Poison Dart Frog (Phyllobates terribilis) is one of the most toxic vertebrates on Earth, yet its chemical defenses originate not from the frog itself, but from compounds acquired through diet. This unique relationship between ecology, physiology, and evolution provided the foundation for an educational infographic exploring the mechanisms behind toxicity and self-resistance.


This case study documents the development of an educational infographic designed to communicate these concepts to a broad audience. Combining scientific illustration, information design, and visual storytelling, the project translates complex biological research into an accessible and engaging learning experience, from an initial species illustration to the creation of an educational infographic.



The following sections document the project's development from an initial species illustration to the final educational infographic.


1. Inspiration & Subject Selection

The project originated as a species study of the Golden Poison Dart Frog (Phyllobates terribilis), with the goal of producing a detailed scientific illustration that captured the animal's distinctive coloration and anatomy.


Reference photography collected at the Vancouver Aquarium informed the rendering process and helped guide key visual details. The finished illustration provided the foundation for a broader investigation into the species' biology, ultimately leading to the development of an educational infographic.


2. Research & Content  Development

A review of primary literature and scientific resources was conducted to identify the most important concepts surrounding poison dart frog toxicity. Research focused on dietary alkaloid acquisition, toxin sequestration, batrachotoxin's mechanism of action, and the physiological adaptations that prevent self-poisoning.


In addition to reviewing scientific publications, visual reference material was gathered to support the development of accurate illustrations and diagrams. Reference imagery informed the depiction of dietary arthropods, anatomical structures, and biological processes throughout the infographic.


The challenge lay in translating complex biological processes into a clear narrative that could be understood by a broad audience without sacrificing scientific accuracy.


3. Information Architecture & Layout Planning

Before creating the rest of the artwork, content hierarchy and narrative flow were explored through thumbnail sketches and low-fidelity wireframes. Initial layouts were developed in PowerPoint, allowing rapid experimentation with structure, content placement, and visual balance.


This stage focused on determining how illustrations, diagrams, and supporting text could work together to guide viewers through the topic in a logical and intuitive sequence.



4. Illustration Development

A series of supporting illustrations, diagrams, and custom icons were developed to explain key scientific concepts throughout the infographic. These included dietary arthropods, toxin sequestration within skin glands, cellular mechanisms of batrachotoxin activity, and anatomical reference elements.


Visual development emphasized clarity and consistency, with a colour palette inspired by the frog's natural environment and striking yellow coloration. Scientific accuracy remained a priority while ensuring each visual element contributed to the educational narrative.



5. Final Assembly & Refinement

All illustrations, diagrams, typography, and supporting graphics were assembled in Adobe Illustrator to create the final infographic. Iterative refinement focused on improving visual hierarchy, readability, and the integration of scientific content across the layout.


The completed piece combines scientific illustration, information design, and visual storytelling to communicate a complex biological topic in an accessible and engaging format.
